August 2024 - Back To School

As Grossmont High School began its 104th school year, it first welcomed the Class of 2028 with preschool activities and then welcomed all students back on campus Tuesday, August 13th, for a week of lessons designed to lead to a successful school year.

Freshman Orientation

August 9th, GHS’s 2024-25 G-Crew led the incoming ninth grade students through a variety of activities to acclimate them to the campus and to make their transition to high school smoother.  Each student was assigned a G-Crew Leader for the year, was able to pick up their schedules and their Chromebooks, take a campus tour, participate in a Welcome Pep Assembly, and have lunch with their classmates and their G-Crew leaders.

The Senior emcees who are on the A-Team senior leadership team, which is the top level of G-Crew, shared their impressions of the event:

Senior Riley Frankwick: "Making people feel welcome and comfortable in a new environment is so important to our school culture and fundamental to the success and enjoyment of future incoming classes. It's so much fun!"

Senior Alexis Holmes: "My favorite part of the day was getting to meet all the new freshman and getting to welcome them to Grossmont in such a fun way."

New Staff Members

This year, Grossmont High School welcomes 6 new teachers: Auto Shop teacher Dwight Brinkerhoff; Dance teacher Caryn Ipapo-Glass; SPED Moderate /Severe teachers Kaitlin Barela and Jessica Medrano; and SPED Mild/Moderate teachers Melissa Rivera and Bryce Towne.

Staff Development

Over three days preceding the first day of school, the GHS staff worked diligently to foster a campus-wide sense of caring, to encourage their students’ academic success and personal well-being, and to nurture its own well-being.  The number of activities are too numerous to recount here.  But focusing on the first week of school activities reveals an indication of their caring.

During the first week, each teacher by department committed to sharing schoolwide lessons with their students using digital Power point documents to illustrate the lessons.

English:  Email etiquette and graduation requirements

Math:  Time management (9th how to use their planners, 10-12th the importance of a planner/calendar)

Social Science: Technology: how to use Schoology and Technology/Apps, 5 Star, Involvement

Physical Education:  Digital tours of the various locations on campus and the bell schedules, including safety bells

VAPA, World Languages, Science: PRIDE (Prepared, Respectful, Involved, Disciplined, Empathetic) overview, Preparedness (how to prepare for class)

Hopefully, these schoolwide activities will “pave the way” for students to more easily connect to Grossmont and its caring staff and reveal to them the many who want them to succeed.  On Fridays throughout the year, many of these lessons will be reinforced through the weekly PRIDE lessons.

Principal Dan Barnes’ enthusiasm for Grossmont is contagious:  “We are very proud of our school culture, climate, academic, and athletic success as we begin our 104th year. Our school resides in an amazing community that goes out of their way to support our school in multiple areas.

This year, our students will have the opportunity to meet and make new friends, take new classes, achieve new goals, expand their horizons, and participate in a variety of sports and activities.  I know they will immediately discover why it is “Great to Be Young and a Foothiller.”

Obviously, there is great excitement and enthusiasm at GHS as another school year begins, with infinite possibilities for learning, friendships, and achievements in and out of the classroom.”
