Art Preston, GHS Class of 1948
Columnist Bryce Miller in the SD Union Tribune on February 8, 2024 debated the greatest athletes to attend SDSU and listed Art Preston, Class of 1948 among them. Bryce Miller, searching for a 4th SDSU athlete to join Tony Gwynn, Marshall Faulk, and Kawhi Leonard on SDSU’s Mt. Rushmore, states,
“If it’s pure, broad athletic ability of the highest degree, I would choose Art Preston. The multi-sport star’s rise came in the late 1940s and early ‘50s. In baseball, he hit .466 or higher twice before beginning a minor-league run with the Red Sox. His .431 career average and .476 season best on the Mesa are the all-time records in the old California Collegiate Athletic Association. He also finished in the top 10 in triples.”
At GHS, according to the 1948 yearbook, Art played basketball, baseball, and football for 4 years and scored 22 touchdowns!
